Sharon Quartey, of Accra, is the founder of De-She College of Fashion.  De-She is an educational institute training young individuals from all walks of life to be professional fashion designers, and is an amazing example of entrepreneurial initiative.

The school is young and growing, and its founder is working hard to bring in and train new students.

Sharon explains:

“Usually, I post flyers of my business on social media, specifically Instagram, as a way to make potential clients patronize my service.  I post paid ads on my Instagram story, targeted at reaching a specific number of people.”

“Occasionally, I organise free training workshops for prospective students to attend.”

“Waterfall has actually made clients find my school without stress. In that, anyone who visits my Instagram page can find a link on my bio which directs them to the school.”

“In the past, I had to direct people by word of mouth, in which some get lost or move to a wrong location.  But with my waterfall location link, they’re just a tap away.  It brings them right here.”

Waterfall Routes is proud and excited to be helping De-She grow, and hopes that everyone interested in fashion design can go check it out.

Frederick Baffour Adu is the owner of Scals Park Barbering Salon in La Paz, Accra.  He and his two employees are focused on providing world class service, which is to say, excellent haircuts and barbering.

Frederick dreams of, “opening additional branches within the city and train more staff”.

To achieve this, he focuses on two things.

First, he grows his business by advertising on Facebook and Instagram, not to mention the referrals generated by happy customers.

Second, he studies, particularly cases of other owners who have successfully scaled up their businesses.

“I have always been receptive to new ideas”, says Frederick.

On that front, Waterfall Routes is also a new idea.

“I used to direct people through phone calls to my shop.  These days I only send the Waterfall link or direct them to my Instagram page, where the link is also posted.”

“This is especially useful if I am busy attending another client.”

Who of course, is busy getting an excellent haircut.

Waakye GuyGuy

Food is culture, and in every country of the world, you can get an early-morning idea of who it’s people are by what they eat for breakfast.  Brazilians have their coffee, Japanese their miso soup, and Americans their pancakes.

In Ghana, many people get their strength for the day starting off with a healthy serving of Waakye: rice and black-eyed peas infused with sorghum and served with Wele stew (the word waakye is a derivation of the Hausa term for rice and beans).

At the restaurant “Waakye GuyGuy”, this tradition is celebrated in what owner Remy-Tay Christopher describes as Afropop Cuisine.

“Afropop Cuisine is delving deep into the cultural exchanges among Africa and her diaspora.  Sometimes we serve Ghanaian style, other times Nigerian style.  Food is part exchange, like music and everything else.”

Located in East Legon, not far from the University of Ghana, the restaurant runs a double shift serving breakfast… ahem… waakye… from early morning til late at night, complete with chicken, fish, eggs, salad, and plantain.  Clients can win rewards using Premium Cards and are always served a celebration of Ghanaian culture.

Remy-Tay maintains an active presence on social media, making sure everyone knows about his great food.  He recently began using Waterfall Routes to help new clients find his restaurant.

“Waterfall has especially helped customers from the University of Ghana, Legon Campus find us.”

Godfred Katenor wants to make the best pork barbecue ever.

Owner of Hot Pork GH, Godfred and his grill can be found from 11am to 10pm everyday except Monday at Tse Addo.  Before sun-up Godfred has his meat prepped and spiced, and by the afternoon it is grilling and ready to serve.

I want the whole world to hear from me,” says Godfred.

With his commitment to spice and finding the perfect flavour, it’s not just your ear that he’s after, but also your mouth.  Godfred has travelled around Ghana and West Africa in search of the perfect spice recipe, and hopes to soon visit barbecue pit masters in the United States as well.

Like all good businessmen, Godfred believes in customer service.

I always make sure to make my customers happy and then they send the word out.  I also visit local offices to give them some of my pork to try.  And they love it.

As part of his effort to advertise and grow his business, Godfred is now a client of Waterfall Routes.

Waterfall has really helped me in terms of direction to my pork joint.  I posted the link on my Instagram and Facebook.  And a lot of people tell me they followed the link.  They got to my place easily without calling for directions.

Godfred plans to eventually have branches of Hot Pork GH across Ghana so that everyone knows his delicious pork barbecue.

Waterfall Routes is designed to help your business advertise, gain more clients, and make more money.  The app allows you to create a business location profile, complete with a location, image, route, contact information, and details, and then share it as a business name, link, and QR code.  How exactly does that help your business though?  Here we’ve created a list of ten different strategies that that you can employ to grow your business, and how Waterfall makes your efforts more powerful:

  • Promote your business over the phone:  Do you have potential clients that call, but then you must explain how to reach your store?  Especially if you aren’t on a main street, your customers can get lost and give up.  Or maybe you aren’t at the business at that exact moment, and can’t send a live location.  With Waterfall, you only need to provide your location name, and your customer can type it in either on the app or map website (https://map.waterfallroutes.com).
  • Promote your business by word of mouth:  Maybe you tell friends who tell friends who tell friends.  Or maybe you work to develop a good reputation in your neighbourhood.  But people still need to find your location!  With the Waterfall link, your clients can share your location and contact information in one message.

  • Share your business on a messaging app:  Many people are active in messaging groups, perhaps from school or religious associations.  With Waterfall, you can share important information about your business with one link that is always the same.
  • Create a business page on Social Media:  Do you have a business account with Facebook or Instagram?  Especially if you have a small business deep in a neighbourhood off of the main streets, the map tools available for your business page don’t really help.  But you can post your Waterfall link, and clients can click on it and see your information, even if they don’t have the app.
  • Create advertisements on Social Media:  Many businesses pay for advertisements through Facebook and other companies.  But just like your business page, how do you show clients where to find you?  Waterfall’s link is compact and efficient, and easy to click!
  • Create a website for your business:  Some website programs have tools to incorporate a map, but many don’t.  And how do you encourage store visits from those viewing your website, if you don’t have a street address?  Once again, the Waterfall link is easy to click.
  • Advertise your business in Yellow Page directories:  Older people will remember the printed directories with every business telephone number.  Maybe you have paid for a profile in a more modern, online yellow pages (like: https://www.ghanayello.com).  With a Waterfall location link, your visitors can identify your business location quickly, and take the link with them when they come visit you.
  • Advertise your business with flyers:  Flyers are a great way to increase awareness of your business, but once again, how do you mark your address?  Waterfall allows you to create a QR code, that can be scanned by any smart phone scanner.  The code opens your location profile either in the app or your phone web browser.
  • Advertise your business with posters: Businesses print posters to hang in front of their store, or in nearby public locations with heavy traffic.  When you put a Waterfall QR on the poster, people can take a picture of it, and always find you later.
  • Provide delivery services to your clients:  Especially with COVID and traffic, businesses are delivering more and more to their clients.  But how do you know if the delivery is nearby, and how long it will take?  With Waterfall, your clients can send you their location link, which you can store, and always be able to delivery quickly to them.

Meet Frank, Solomon, and Patrick (left to right)

In partnership with the IT Consultancy Company DS-Dexterre, Waterfall Routes Inc has deployed its first field team.  Each day they select a neighbourhood in Accra, Ghana and pop in on local businesses to present Waterfall Routes.  The field team helps them download the free app and register; they then set up the business’s location profile.  It’s a lot of work, especially when they visit a neighbourhood for the first time, as no routing landmarks have yet been established!

Waterfall Routes is a free app available in the Google Play Store (you can download it here).  It is a new addressing tool that allows you to create a location profile (business or residence) that can be shared as a link or a QR code.  With that information, businesses can easily identify their location, something that is typically difficult in the sprawling cities of Africa.

Most African cities don’t in fact, have functional addressing systems.  To date, this has been viewed as yet another development challenge in Africa, despite hundreds of millions of dollars in investment.  However, street addressing, with its European origin connected to taxation and individual land ownership, might be a bad fit on a continent where almost all land is collectively owned by governments and tribal communities.  Waterfall Routes offers a new model: your address is where you are, and if your business moves, all you change is your location profile information.  Your link and QR code don’t need updating at all!

Our app is almost ready to launch!  We are finalizing its functions and rooting out bugs.  Shortly we will begin testing in Accra, Ghana, prior to making available in the Google Play Store.  Stay tuned!
